In this episode of Oral Histories of Mobile Communication, we speak with Mizuko Ito, Professor at the University of California, Irvine and Director of the Connected Learning Lab. Ito traces how a postdoctoral research trip to Tokyo between 1999 and 2002 — originally focused on gaming — redirected her career when she found herself in the middle of Japan's mobile phone explosion. She discusses how teenage girls in Japan pioneered text messaging, camera phones, and emoji before the industry formally supported these practices, and why the urban structure and sociocultural constraints of Japanese teen life made them uniquely positioned as early mobile innovators. Ito reflects on her edited collection bringing Japanese mobile scholarship to English-speaking audiences, her contributions to youth culture studies within the mobile communication field, and the shift from interpersonal communication to the ubiquitous, politically and commercially saturated mobile landscape of today. She closes with thoughts on the ongoing debate around youth mental health and mobile phones, the coming integration of AI into ambient and device-embedded environments, and her hopes for the field's continued openness to international perspectives and theoretical innovation.
